The Department of Land, Air, and Water Resources in the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences at the University of California, Davis is recruiting an Assistant Professor of Spatial and Environmental Informatics with a preferred emphasis in multidisciplinary “big data” geospatial methods to study terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems. This is an academic year (9-month), Assistant Professor tenure-track position with teaching, research, outreach/engagement and service responsibilities and includes the expectation that the appointee will conduct mission-oriented research and outreach/engagement of relevance to the California Agricultural Experiment Station (http://caes.ucdavis.edu/research/agexpstn).
The Department of Land, Air, and Water Resources is seeking applicants that focus on environmental research emphasizing environmental informatics using geospatial tools and analysis, with a goal to advance our understanding of spatial and temporal environmental patterns and processes that relate to responses and change in the physical environment, addressing natural and managed conditions. The candidate is expected to show a record of achievement in environmental informatics. The successful candidate should demonstrate experience with various informatics techniques and geospatial technologies, and have an interest in and ability to work with emerging “big data” sources and mining methods, including new data sources and types, developing and using deep learning and other quantitative methods to discover and integrate information from sensor webs, environmental databases, and disparate sources and types of geospatial data. The position will complement existing LAWR strengths in regional climatology, hydrology, and biogeochemical processes and campus-wide excellence in ecology and environmental sciences. The candidate is expected to collaborate with environmentally relevant programs on campus and demonstrate experience and interest in working with interdisciplinary groups.
The appointee is expected to establish a competitively funded research program to address critical or emerging issues in application of spatial informatics to study environmental processes related to climate change and extremes as evidenced by peer reviewed publications.
We seek a commitment to excellence in teaching. The applicant is expected to teach an undergraduate upper-level core GIS course, an additional upper-level undergraduate environmental informatics course, and a graduate level course in her/his area of expertise (average of 2.5 courses per year). Supervision of graduate students, student advising, curricular development is expected.
Participation in and development of outreach/engagement programs, and performance of departmental and university service is expected. This position is expected to work with extension educators and partners in allied industries.
Ph.D. or equivalent degree in environmental science, informatics, soil science, hydrology, ecology, atmospheric science, geography, applied computer science or a closely related field. Post-doctoral experience is preferred. Evidence of research excellence is expected. The candidate should have the ability to develop and instruct undergraduate and graduate courses and the ability to develop and conduct extramurally funded research in geospatial and environmental informatics.
